Lab alum Kendall Mills earned a from UC Santa Barbara in 2016 working with NOAA looking at the impact of whale strikes by cargo ships in the Santa Barbara Channel.
Then she went to the University of Alaska Fairbanks to work with Link Olson on the biogeographic history of the world’s marmots and the genetic basis of melanism in Alaska’s hoary marmots. According to Kendall, the coolest thing she discovered was a gain-of-function mutation in melanistic marmots that caused a receptor to upregulate melanin production in vitro. Go Kendall !
